Christian Curnyn
(Conductors) Biography:
Christian Curnyn has emerged as one of the most sought after conductors specialising in Baroque and Classical repertoire. After reading Music at the University of York, he took postgraduate studies on the harpsichord at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. In 1994 Christian Curnyn founded the Early Opera Company (www.earlyopera.com). Notable Handel performances with his company have included Agrippina in New York, Ariodante for the BOC Covent Garden Festival, Orlando for the South Bank Centre Early Music Festival, Partenope for Buxton and Aldeburgh Festivals, and national tours of Flavio and Susanna. He has also given frequent recitals with EOC at Wigmore Hall, and appeared in concert with the ensemble at Cheltenham Festival, Spitalfields Festival, York Early Music Festival, and Lufthansa Festival. In the spring of 2005 Christian Curnyn made his debut with Scottish Opera conducting their production of Semele and returned in 2006 for a new production of Handel’s Tamerlano. He conducted Handel’s Jephtha for the Halle Handel Festival, Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea, Handel’s Orlando and Handel’s Alcina for Opera Theatre Company, Dublin and Handel’s Saul for Opera North. For Grange Park Opera he has conducted Le Nozze di Figaro in 2006, Handel’s Semele in 2007 and Cavalli’s Eliogabalo in 2009. On the Concert Platform, Christian has conducted the Ulster Orchestra, Halle Orchestra, Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, English Concert, Wroclaw Baroque orchestra, and Irish Baroque Orchestra. 2010 saw a tour with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra with Nicola Benedetti followed by a recording on the Decca label. In 2008 Christian Curnyn made his hugely successful debut with English National Opera in a new production of Partenope. He returned to ENO for After Dido, Katie Mitchell’s realization of Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas. In 2009 he conducted Britten’s The Beggar’s Opera with The Royal Opera, Covent Garden and in 2010 made an acclaimed debut with the New York City Opera (Partenope) and Chicago Opera Theater (Cavalli’s Giasone). Other engagements this season include Tolomeo with Glimmerglass Opera, the 2010 BBC Proms (Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater) with The Early Opera Company and his debut with Opera Australia (Partenope). Further into the future he returns to English National Opera, Chicago Opera Theater and New York City Opera and makes his debuts with Frankfurt Opera and Stuttgart Opera. His recording of Handel’s Partenope for Chandos won widespread critical acclaim and his recording of Handel’s Semele was chosen as a Best Recording of 2008 by The Sunday Times, Editors Choice in Gramophone Magazine and was awarded the 2008 Stanley Sadie Handel Prize. Recent releases on the Chandos label include Eccles’ The Judgement of Paris, awarded a Diapason D’or and The Beggar’s Opera. Recordings of Handel’s Flavio (Chandos) and Il Trionfo del Tempo (Wigmore Live) will be be released during 2010. This biography is for website use only.
