Biography:

Soprano Phyllis Bryn-Julson, born in America of Norwegian parents, is internationally known for her perfect-pitch three-octave range and the remarkable musicality she brings to a very broad spectrum of vocal literature. Perhaps best known for her pioneering interest and performance of 20th century works, Miss Bryn-Julson has often collaborated with conductor-composers Pierre Boulez, Leonard Bernstein, Elliot Carter, Olivier Messiaen, Witold Lutoslawski and György Ligeti in concerts and recordings of their works. She is equally well known for her performances of Bach's St Matthew Passion, Beethoven's Missa Solemnis and Mozart's Mass in C minor and concert arias.

Miss Bryn-Julson has performed frequently with the major symphony orchestras in Los Angeles, New York, Boston and Chicago, and in Berlin, Paris, Amsterdam and London. She sings recitals throughout the U.S. and Europe and has given performances at the Tanglewood, Saratoga, Ojai, Flanders, Salzburg, Warsaw and Aldeburgh Festivals. At The Royal Opera, Covent Garden, she had great success in Stravinsky's Le Rossignol.

Miss Bryn-Julson's prestigious discography includes critically acclaimed recordings of Schoenberg's Pierrot Lunaire, Stravinsky's vocal works with Boulez and discs of works by Britten and del Tredici amongst others. She has also recorded Ligeti Aventures and Nouvelles Aventures with The Philharmonia conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen, works she performed in London and Paris in during the Ligeti Festivals in 1997.

Miss Bryn-Julson currently chairs the vocal music department at the prestigious Peabody Institute in Baltimore and has taught 20th century repertoire at the Britten-Pears School in Aldeburgh.
