Leopold String Trio
(String Trio)
Biography:

“Innovative programming and outstanding performances have made the Leopold String Trio one of today’s most versatile and imaginative chamber ensembles” BBC Music Magazine

The Leopold String Trio is firmly established at the forefront of the international chamber music scene performing regularly at the worlds leading venues and music festivals. Since forming in 1991 they have championed the often neglected medium of the string trio with peerless interpretations of the core repertoire while seeking out lesser-known masterpieces and giving premieres of many works by the likes of Kurtag, Henze, David Matthews and Judith Bingham. This commitment has led to many awards and accolades including selection for the inaugural BBC New Generation Artists scheme, the E.C.H.O Rising Stars scheme, a 2004 Borletti/Buitoni Award and the 2005 Royal Philharmonic Society’s Chamber Ensemble Award.

Their Borletti/Buitoni award helped them mount ‘Leopold String Trio: The Series’, a three year cycle of concerts at the Wigmore Hall and Turner Sims Concert Hall in Southampton consisting of six pairs of themed concerts expressing the scope and versatility of the string trio repertoire. The series runs through to March 2008 featuring many guest artists including pianists Marc-André Hamelin, Paul Lewis and Martin Roscoe and oboist Nick Daniel.

Their recordings for Hyperion Records - the complete Beethoven String Trios; Mozart’s Divertimento in E flat K563; Mozart Piano Quartets with Paul Lewis; Schubert Trios and the ‘Trout’ Quintet with Paul Lewis and Graham Mitchell; Dohnanyi, Martinu and Schoenberg Trios, and the complete Brahms Piano Quartets with Marc-André Hamelin - have all been greeted with outstanding reviews and nominations for awards. Future recording projects include the Taneyev String Trios and Fauré Piano Quartets with Marc-André Hamelin.
