Heinz Holliger
(Oboe)
Biography:

Heinz Holliger is one of the most versatile and extraordinary musicians of our time. Born in 1939 in Langenthal, Switzerland, he studied in Bern, Paris and Basel: the oboe with Emile Cassagnaud and Pierre Pierlot, the piano with Sava Savoff and Yvonne Lefébure, and composition with Sándor Veress and Pierre Boulez.

His unique career as an oboist, conductor and composer began when he claimed first prize at many international competitions. His uncompromising integrity of approach to both musical interpretation and the complete mastery of the oboe have led to him developing the technical possibilities for his instrument beyond measure. His thirst for contemporary music is insatiable, resulting in many well-known composers dedicating compositions to him, and he has tirelessly championed wrongly neglected composers, both past and present.

As a composer his recent successes have included his opera "Schneewittchen" premiered at the Zurich Opera House in 1998 to great international acclaim; "Partita" with András Schiff for the 2001 Berliner Festwochen; a violin-concerto written for Thomas Zehetmair, and "Puneigä", settings of poems by Anna Maria Bacher first performed by Juliane Banse at Wien Modern in November 2002.

In April 2003 the internationally renowned “Cité de la musique” in Paris dedicated a whole week to Heinz Holliger as oboist, composer and conductor. Heinz Holliger invited prominent soloists and orchestras to celebrate this honour and to perform with him.

As a conductor he has appeared with many of the world’s leading orchestras and ensembles such as the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the English Chamber Orchestra, the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna Symphony. His long association with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe has led to several recordings with them. He is also regular guest conductor with the SWR-Symphony Orchestra and the Budapest Festival Orchestra, amongst others.

Heinz Holliger has received numerous accolades for his extensive discography of recordings for the likes of Teldec, Philips and ECM.
